As a result of the defeat of Germany on the banks of the Volga (then Stalingrad) in the Second World War, January 1943, the Russians erected a symbolic sculpture piece; The Motherland.

This 52 metre high work of art forms part of the Mamayev Kurgan Memorial complex, situated on the Mamayev Hill in Volgograd.

This towering symbol of victory and remembrance signifies the commitment and resilience of the Russians in their quest to defeat their enemy, but perhaps more importantly; to protect its citizens.


The Motherland is the creation of sculptor Yevgeni Vuchetich. The sculpture, which took eight years to complete represents a mother standing guard over her country, her raised sword threatening to destroy any who dare to invade her and the safety of her children. The extent of her determination to protect her children (citizens), is symbolized by the 29 metre long sword weighing 250 tons. The credo attached to the sculpture reads:

“He Who Commander The Hill, Commanded The City.”
